Paygro awarded Market Development Grant by Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention

05/10/06

The Paygro Division of the Garick Corporation is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a 2006 Market Development Grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).  The Market Development Grant encourages recycling of a variety of waste streams throughout Ohio, including organic materials.  Paygro, located near South Charleston in Clark County, will use the grant funds to install a food waste processing system ahead of its existing composting operations. The project will better equip Paygro to receive and process pre- and post-consumer food wastes from the surrounding areas of west-central and southwestern Ohio.  Paygro was sponsored for the grant by the Clark County Waste Management District and endorsed by the Greene County Division of Environmental Services.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention plans to award the grant during a visit and tour of Paygro’s facilities by ODNR Director Samuel Speck on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at 10:00 AM.  Ohio Governor Bob Taft has also been invited to attend the ceremonies.

Paygro has been successfully recycling food waste from Ohio sources for several years.  Currently, Paygro receives 260 tons of food waste weekly; some of that waste contains cardboard and other paper products that require grinding to allow proper composting.  The Market Development Grant will fund the installation of a grinder and related equipment. With the increased food waste processing capacity that will result from this project, Paygro will then start recycling programs at area colleges, universities, schools, nursing homes, group homes and hospitals. According to Doug Alderman, Paygro’s Director of Business Development, “Garick and Paygro’s Vision Statement says that we will enhance people’s lives and the environment by providing the finest sustainable natural resource products on earth.  This grant will allow us to expand the concept of sustainability to include many new players and products.  We are very excited about the many materials that this program will keep out of the landfills and send to beneficial re-use.  We are also looking forward to this project creating approximately 6 new jobs at our facility.”

Paygro’s parent company is the Cleveland-based Garick Corporation.  Garick is a mulch, compost and soil amendment production and sales company and transportation logistics provider that markets products and services throughout the US.  The Paygro division of Garick was initially developed in the early 1970’s to compost manure from the Ohio Feedlot. The Paygro facility currently processes approximately 40,000 yards of biowaste each year consisting of livestock manure, food waste, yard waste and sawdust. A staff of 25 operates the facility, including 2 engineers who supervise the composting operations. Composting is an efficient process for transforming waste biomass materials into a soil-like material used for landscape improvement, soil amendment, soil remediation and food production, and as a potting media component.

Paygro plans to begin installation of the new equipment in July of this year, with an expected completion and start-up date of October 31, 2006.
